A Very Small List of Ingredients to Avoid
caseniate- milk protein somtimes put in soy cheese to help it melt easier.
albumin
- the protein part of egg whites. also found in animal blood and milk. used in a wide variety of foods.
anchovies- those stinky little fish that are used in worcestershire sauce, ceasar salad, and some pizza toppings.
(animal) shortening, lard, tallow, or suet
- includes many kinds of animal fats, and are very common in anything from pastries, margarine, refried beans, and other processed foods, to crayons, soaps, cosmetics, and candles.
gelatin- this nasty little devil is what makes jell-o and marshmallows gell. (...and some yogurt, ice cream, pudding, jellied food, pill capsule, frosting...) it comes from the protein of bones, carilage, tendons, skin, and other various "tissues". some gelatin is vegan, and made with carrageen and locust bean gum.
lactose- a sugar that naturally occurs in cow's milk produced from whey. found not only in baby formula and confections, but in medicine as well.
pancreatin- a pancreatic extract from cows or pigs that is a mixture of enzymes used as a digestive aid.
whey- the watery liquid from cheesemaking, which is found in tons of products, especially baked goods.
